PEACE CORNER LIFE:
COME AND SEE!!

Life at the Center is a lot of fun. However, the center wasn’t built just for that: it was created to try to keep kids out of trouble and away from the street’s corners. Surely the Center could just provide us with pool table, ping pong and other games, but this would not fulfill the Peace Corner mission.
The message the center is trying to get out is that of telling the kids that there are better things they could do with their lives that just hanging out on corners or getting in trouble.
They can come to the center if they need help with their homework, get their GED, talk to a lawyer  or maybe also get help with a job.
They can also come here just to have fun and play safely with other guys.
However, if they really want to have fun, they can come to the Summer Program. With all the different activities and the field trips, all the guys who come to the summer program they can come to know that there is more to do  and know than the places where they usually hang out.

What’s new?
By: Fr. Maurizio

How are you?  First of all take some time to read the two articles by Terrell and Sahondo and the letter from Shawn. I am sure you will find what they wrote very interesting and enlightening: thanks a lot to the three of them.
The GED class is almost over and our students are getting ready to take their GED test in two parts, April 24 and May 1 2004, at Augustana college. It is the opinion of the teachers that all of them will successfully pass the test.
We are also getting ready for our Summer program.  Connected with it, we will be able to provide five (yes 5) summer jobs for neighborhood teens.
As for our daily life at the center, I can definitely say that there is no such thing as a routine day here. You all guys make the Peace Corner an incredible place and it is amazing to see you here playing, studying, discussing and sometimes even arguing over a pool game: thanks because you make the Peace Corner alive!!!
On a final note, starting April 25 we will resume our Bible Study on Sunday afternoon. The center will open at 3.30 and Bible study will follow for about 20 minutes. We will read together the Gospel of Mark. I assure you it will be a wonderful journey with Jesus.
After Bible study, the center will resume its regular activities until 5.30 P.M. You are all invited to join us: believe me, you will not regret it!! May God bless you all!!

The G.E. D. Course

The G.E. D course (which the alternative high school diploma), is almost over. Our students will take their GED test at Augustana College in Chicago April 24 and May 1 2004:GOOD LUCK GUYS!!
Once again: Thanks to our wonderful teachers!!

The Computer class

After a promising start the computer class had winded out because of several reasons. We were able to prepare few resumes for our students and they will use when they go job hunting.
     Thanks again Fr. Mario!!! ...

The Job Training Program

“The Peace Corner Handy Man Service”. Is in full swing!! We landed few jobs with private families but also work steady for CIC a developer company cleaning abandoned buildings and preparing them for rehab. Now thanks to a grant, we will focus on training new guys and widen our services.

The Summer Program
Summer is not far and we are getting ready for it.
Please stay tuned for more info about our incredible Summer Program
starting at the end of June.
We promise you a lot of basketball, swimming, field trips and….FUN!

LIFE IN THE ‘HOOD
Life in the ‘hood has it’s good and bad. One good thing about the ‘hood is that there is almost always something to do. Either playing basketball, football or just talking to somebody. Especially there is always something to do on weekends: there are parties or something exciting.
However, life in the ’hood has also its negative side. One major thing is that there are gangs and gang activities almost every three blocks. This means that if you are in a gang and go in another gang territory, they will probably try to jump you or do something to you, so you have to be careful where you go.
There is also a lot of violence in the ’hood because of gangs, but also because people are poor, very poor and sometimes they do certain things to protect themselves but also to support themselves and their families.

MY FUTURE…
In the next five years I can see myself being involved with the construction business.  After I graduate from High school and get my diploma, I hope to be able to take some more courses so to be able to start my own business obviously related to construction.  In this way I will be able to support myself and eventually my family too.
