The 2006 Summer Program

THE PEACE CORNER RAP

The Peace Corner Newsletter August 2006   Year 3, Issue # 6

AFTER THE SUMMER AND READY TO ROLL...

Summer was really a busy time for all of us at the Peace Corner. Our summer Program was incredibly successful with more than 60 kids and youth enrolled and a myriads of activities and many field trips. Worthy to be mentioned are the four young men, Jalil, Paris, Chad and Kevin, who worked here as summer counselors. For these four high school students it was their first job and they really did well. I am sure this experience will help them in the future. Look at the next page: Jalil and Paris share their experience here.

Obviously our staff: Mike, Daniel and Jovan, did an incredible job, both as the amount of hours they put in and especially in the quality of the work they have done with our youth.  Sydwell a Comboni Seminarian from South Africa also spent the summer with us. He shared is wisdom while –trying– to teach us his native language: Zulu. You can read his article on page 2. By the way, after Mike and Javon in the last issue, now is Daniel’s turn to introduce himself to all of you.

We are not gearing up for our Fall activities. The GED and the Tutoring programs will resume at the beginning of October, volunteers from Loyola University, from Dominican University and from many paths of life will help us with these two programs. Also the computer class and the BYOP (Be your Own Person) class will resume in October. Meanwhile the job training program and the job placement are still going very strong with a lot of youth involved.

Coming up in December is the SECOND ANNUAL DINNER DANCE. It will be again at Brunetti’s  in Franklin Park. I really encourage you to attend this event where friends and benefactors of The Peace Corner meet and have a good time.  This year then we have in store a BIG SURPRISE and we would like to share this incredible news with all of you.

Enough for now, I hope to see and THANK all of you at the Dinner Dance, in the meantime please keep us in your prayers,  you are always in ours.

VOICES FROM THE SUMMER COUNSELORS . . .

For our 2006 Summer Program we had 4 youth working

for the Peace Corner as summer Counselors.

Their responsibilities varied from supervising the younger kids

to help with the maintenance and running of the Center.

They share with us their impressions.

If I said I didn’t enjoy the Summer Program I would be lying. Thanks to the help of Maurizio I was employed to supervise younger children (age 10-13) during the summer activities. By this being my first time working, this was a great experience for me. It was also great to see the children enjoying themselves when we would go to the Lakefront, the Park or to Indiana Dunes where we would also have great BBQs. As I stated before I loved the working experience and I would like to thank Maurizio for this opportunity of working my fist summer job.

The experience of working in the Peace Corner Summer Program has showed me how to interact with younger kids while having a responsibility position. I learned to better interact with them not only when we went on trips, but also while staying at the center and talking to them while we play board games, pool, ping pong or having math games. This program has showed me that I can have fun and work at the same time when I put my effort and heart in it. Working at the Summer Program has also made me more  responsible and mature.

My Name is Bamncedile Sydwell Nkosi. I was born and raised in South Africa. Over the last three months, I have been doing my summer experience at the Peace Corner Youth Center. All in all, my summer experience at the Peace Corner was a worthwhile and rewarding experience in the sense that I have had an opportune time to share my life experience and who I am with the youth. I have found it very meaningful to assist the youth in every possible way to express their dreams and their desires about what they would like to be in life. Beyond a doubt, the Peace Corner has indeed a significant contribution to the future and well being of the youth. Ultimately, I would like to articulate my sincere thanks for all the youth and staff who had tremendously participated in the summer program. I must say that I really had a lot of fun. May God bless you!

 ONE OF A KIND...

Hi everybody, my name  is Daniel Brown and I am 19 years old. I have a beautiful child, Daniel Jr. and I love music– Jay-Z is the best!!!  I found out about the Peace Corner when I was on my way to school and for the past 5 years I have been a regular here. Last year I began working for the center and I am now part of the staff: I really like my job (certainly not an easy one: (from supervising kids to organizing  activities to caring for the maintenance) because it is teaching me a lot.

What I like the most about the Peace Corner is that it teaches responsibility and leadership and also keeps a lot of youth off the streets. We have various activities and program here at the Peace Corner: the educational ones: the GED and tutoring programs, the BYOP class, the computer class, a very successful Job Training program and  a variety of recreational activities.

One last thought: among the many things I really appreciated at the Peace Corner, the one I cherish the most are the strong role models we have here. See you here….soon.
