Programs at the Peace Corner

Our Youth Program

The Peace Corner Youth Center is open after school to the youth between the ages of 12 and 18 everyday from 2:30pm until 6:30pm. When students arrive at the center, they are directed to the classroom where tutors are ready to help with homework or to provide help with any academic issues the students may be having. Students who have no homework, or have finished their homework quickly are then directed to our computer lab where they are connected with our academic enrichment software. Students must work for at least 30 minutes before being allowed to enjoy our recreation facilities and gym.

Youth Program Goals

  • Provide a safe haven and neutral ground to young people living in a neighborhood characterized by gang violence and drug use.
  • Create a sense of belonging and community for young people as a potent alternative to the lure of street life and gang membership.
  • Instill self-esteem and pride of accomplishment by endowing young people with responsibility and “ownership” of the Peace Corner.

Students enjoy a wide variety of activities during the afternoon and are supervised by staff and a large community of volunteers from local area universities and professional organizations. Our staff and volunteers actively participate in our sports, nutrition, education and community outreach projects with our youth.
